Hail-Dented Garage Doors in Frisco: Repair, Replace or Claim

Collin County hail is real

This part of North Texas gets significant hail most years. The National Weather Service measured a 2.75-inch stone between Frisco and McKinney in March 2019, and reported 1.75- to two-inch hail in Frisco and Allen in May 2023. In February 2022, residents in west Frisco described hail breaking every window in their overhead doors. Roofs get the attention after a storm, but the garage door faces the weather head-on and is often the second thing damaged.

Which damage matters

Cosmetic dents

Small, shallow dents across the face of a steel door are ugly and structurally harmless. The door still rolls, seals and locks.

Creased or cracked panels

A dent that creases a panel along its width, or cracks a seam, can stop the section flexing over the curved part of the track. That door binds, strains the opener and can come off its rollers. That is a repair.

Broken glass

Windows in the top section are the most common hail casualty. Some can be replaced individually; on older doors the insert may be discontinued.

Hidden damage

Check the top of the door, the opener and the weatherstripping on the frame. Hail driven by wind into a part-open garage can damage more than the door face.

Replacing a panel or the whole door

If the door model is still made, a single damaged section can be replaced, though a new panel next to sun-faded old ones may not match. On a discontinued model, or with damage across several sections, a whole new door is often the only clean answer. Insulated steel doors resist hail better than single-skin doors, which is worth knowing if you are replacing anyway.

How the insurance side usually goes

Hail is typically covered by a homeowners policy as sudden damage, subject to your deductible and your policy's terms, and many Texas policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible. Photograph the door the day after the storm, from the street and close up, before anything is touched. Get a written estimate from a garage door company, then decide whether the amount is worth a claim against your deductible. If the roof was damaged in the same storm, the door often goes on the same claim. This site does not handle claims and is not an insurance adviser; your policy and your adjuster decide.

Watch for storm chasers

After a big Collin County storm, out-of-town crews arrive within days, knock on doors, and offer to "handle the insurance". Be wary of anyone who asks you to sign over insurance proceeds, wants a large deposit before the claim is approved, or cannot show a local address and a track record. The City of Frisco says it suspended its solicitation permit requirement in 2016, so do not treat a knock on the door as anything the city has vetted. Ask for photo ID and a local address, and get a written estimate before signing anything.

Hail on your door? Call, and a local company can look at it, tell you whether it is cosmetic, and put a written estimate in your hands.

Where to go next

Common questions

Will insurance replace my hail-dented garage door?

Often, if the damage is from a covered storm and the cost exceeds your deductible. Check your policy, including any separate wind and hail deductible, and photograph the damage before repairs.

Can hail dents be popped out?

Some shallow dents can be improved, but steel garage door panels rarely come back flat. Most people live with cosmetic dents or replace the panel.

Are some doors hail resistant?

Thicker and insulated steel doors dent less than single-layer steel, and some manufacturers sell impact-resistant lines. Glass inserts remain the weak point.
