Garage Door Won't Close? What to Check Before Anyone Comes Out

Updated 2026-10 · Frisco, TX

Start with what it does

"Won't close" covers several different faults. A door that starts down and goes back up is a different problem from one that does not move at all, and both are different from a door that closes with the wall button held down but not with the remote. Note which one you have before trying anything.

Five checks you can safely make

1. The photo-eye sensors

The two small units a few inches above the floor on either side. Each has a light; if one is off or blinking, they are out of line or blocked. Wipe the lenses, clear anything in the beam, and gently adjust the bracket until both lights are steady. This alone fixes a large share of "won't close" calls.

2. Low sun

If the problem happens only in the late afternoon on a west-facing garage, sunlight is hitting the receiving sensor. It is very common in Frisco in winter, when the sun sits low. A shade or swapping the sensors side to side fixes it.

3. Hold the wall button

On most openers, holding the wall button down closes the door even if the sensors are not seeing each other. If that works, the sensors are your problem. Watch the door the whole way down.

4. Lock and power

Check the lock or vacation button on the wall panel, the outlet, and the breaker. A tripped GFCI elsewhere in the garage can kill the opener's outlet.

5. The remote

If the wall button works but the remote does not, start with the battery. LED bulbs in or near the opener can also interfere with older remotes.

When to stop and call

  • You heard a bang and the door is heavy or will not lift: a spring has broken.
  • The door is crooked, or a cable is slack or hanging loose.
  • Rollers have come out of the track.
  • The opener runs but the door does not move with it.
  • You can see a gap in a spring coil on the bar above the door.

In any of those, do not run the opener again and do not try to force the door. Leave it and call.

If the door is stuck open overnight

An open garage is an open door into many Frisco houses. If the door will not close and it is not a sensor problem, lock the door from the garage into the house, move valuables out of sight, and say it is stuck open when you call. Many companies prioritise that over a door that is stuck shut.

Tried the checks and it still will not close? Call with what you saw, and a local company will tell you what it is likely to be.

Common questions

Why does my garage door close and then go back up?

Usually the safety sensors are blocked, dirty or misaligned, or the close-force setting is reacting to a door that is binding. Check the sensors first.

Can I bypass the sensors?

You can close the door by holding the wall button, watching it the whole way. Do not disconnect the sensors permanently; they are what stops the door closing on a child or a pet.

My door closes with the button but not the remote. Why?

Most likely the remote battery, or radio interference from LED bulbs. If a new battery does not help, the remote may need reprogramming.
