Do You Need a Permit to Replace a Garage Door in Frisco?
Updated 2026-10 · Frisco, TX

The short version
Repairs to an existing door, such as springs, cables, rollers or an opener plugged into an existing outlet, do not normally involve the city. A full door replacement might. Frisco's current permit fee schedule, effective October 1, 2026, includes a residential category for "Windows / Doors Replacement" at $75 plus $25 for each additional element, up to $150. The schedule does not say whether a garage door counts as one of those doors, and this site is not the authority on that. Frisco Building Inspections is.
What the city has published
The fee schedule
Besides the door line above, the schedule doubles the permit fee for non-emergency work started without a permit, and lists separate electrical permits. It is on the City of Frisco website as the permit, inspection and miscellaneous consolidated fee schedule.
The codes
Frisco adopted the 2024 International Residential Code, with local amendments, effective March 1, 2026. Garage doors are building components under that code, with wind-load requirements, which is one reason replacements carry a rating label.
Contractor registration
Frisco requires contractors to register with Building Inspections before a permit is issued, and permits are applied for online through the city's plans and permits portal. A company that regularly works in Frisco will know whether it pulls a permit for door replacements.
Permit or HOA approval: they are different things
A city permit is about the building code. HOA approval is about your deed restrictions, and in Frisco's master-planned communities it is often the stricter of the two about a garage door's style and colour. You may need both, one, or neither. Getting the HOA's written approval does not tell you anything about the city, and the reverse is also true.
Questions to ask before you order
- Does the company pull a city permit for garage door replacements in Frisco, and is it in the price?
- Does the new door carry a wind-load rating label, and what is the rating?
- Is any electrical work involved, such as a new outlet for the opener?
- Has the HOA approved the style and colour in writing?
- Who is responsible if an inspection is required and fails?
If the company cannot answer the first question, ask Frisco Building Inspections directly before the order is placed. A custom door is usually non-returnable, and finding out about a rule after delivery is expensive.
This is general information
Rules change and the city interprets its own codes. Nothing here is a permit determination for your house. Treat it as the questions to ask, and confirm anything that matters with the City of Frisco.
